CEOs Weigh in on Philippine BDO Industry, Digital Transformation

In just a little over a decade, the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry steadily rose to become one of the major drivers of the Philippine economy, with investments coming from around the world. However, the trend towards digital transformation as well as disruptive politics in major markets and creeping perfectionism stand to shape the future of the global BPO/Shared Services sector.

With the theme “Headwinds Make Us Stronger,” the Asia Business Process Management (BPM) Summit this year gathered together the brightest leaders from the biggest companies in Southeast Asia’s BPO scene to talk about how to rise above the challenges brought about by the seeming global uncertainty and the effects of digital transformation. Industry leaders also shared their valuable insights on the future of the BPO industry in the Philippines, and how it plays into the whole BPO scene of Southeast Asia.

“I think ADEC is creating a new space, to be honest. I think that the whole nature of the environmental requirements of Big Darter and Solutions, the BPO industry is ideally positioned to be able to help solve those problems.”

“I think the Philippine market has a very strong place to play in the BPO market. We see a lot of transformation in Australia, moving into custom service, and the BPO market here can move there to add more value. I see that there’s a very strong place for them to play in Asia”

“For the BPO Industry in Vietnam, we didn’t want to compete with the Philippines and India for the English language. So, we said from the beginning that German or some European languages will be getting some IT support, from databases, and to work with these languages. It doesn’t matter so much for us if it is German or Hungarian or Finnish. And we are now pretty successful in the rest of these languages.”

“We are currently the number two destination in the world (for healthcare information services). We have been on quite a meteoric rise over the past few years. At 2010, our industry was about 107 million in revenue as a sector. We just finished 2016 at 2.1 billion in revenue for the sector. We also just completed a Frost and Sullivan road map 20/20 too for our industry to lift their prospects going forward. The health care industry, again, is expected to be the leading subsector in all of the IT BPM for the Philippine IT BPM.”

“There are a lot of technologies now that enable digital transformation. However, what’s most important about digital is it’s actually a culture. So, if you take a look at the digital companies today like Uber and Facebook, while they have technologies, the most important thing is something that we need to learn as traditional companies.”
